Acoustic and Electric Bass Applied Music Guidelines
Classical Technique:
Technical Skills:

(Freshman Year) First semester: All major and minor scales: one octave up to F on the G string, open and closed position with thumb roll. Second semester: All major and minor scales: one octave to the C above harmonic G on the G string.
(Sophomore Year) All major and minor scales: two octaves.


Exercises/Studies:
(Freshman Year) Simandl, Method for Double Bass, Book I, pp. 1-67.  Rabbath: Studies for Double Bass, Book I, pp. 1-100.  Sevcik: School of Bowing #4, examples 1-60.
(Sophomore Year) First semester: Simandl, Method for Double Bass, Book I, pp. 68-129; 30 Studies, #1-15.   Sevcik: School of Bowing #5.


Repertoire:
(Freshman Year) Vivaldi, Six Sonatas for Double Bass, slow and fast movement from one sonata.  Simandl, Method Book, p. 32, #8. Giovannino, one Sonata either in F or a minor.  Simandl: p. 61, example #1; pp. 64-67.
(Sophomore Year) Telemann, Sonatas in f minor or a minor.  Corelli, Sonata in d minor.  Eccles, Sonata in g minor.



Jazz Technique:
Technical Skills:
(Freshman Year) All major and minor, pentatonic and blues scales: one octave minimum. 
(Sophomore Year) All modal scales, two octaves.


Exercises/Studies:
(Freshman Year) Friedland, Building Walking Bass Lines, Book I.
(Sophomore Year) Friedland, Building Walking Bass Lines, Book II.  Reid, The Evolving Bassist, pp. 45-100.


Repertoire:
(Freshman Year) All Blues, Blue Bossa, A Night in Tunisia, or equivalent; Gershwin, Porter, Ellington; Bass lines: My Girl, What's Goin' On, Same Old Song, or equivalent; Led Zeppelin, Cream, Clapton.
(Sophomore Year) Some Day My Prince Will Come, The Girl From Ipanema, Wave, or equivalent; Gershwin, Porter, Ellington; Bass lines: Stevie Wonder songs, or equivalent; Zeppelin, Rush, Motown.
