Technical Skills:
(to be developed over the Freshman and Sophomore Years) All scales (major; natural, harmonic, and melodic minor): four octaves, hands together, quarter note=80-100, in (a) parallel octaves, (b) contrary motion, (c) parallel thirds, sixths, and tenths. Arpeggios of major and minor triads, dominant sevenths, and diminished sevenths: four octaves, hands together, quarter note=80-100, in parallel motion.
Exercises/Studies:
Each semester, one memorized etude equivalent to Czerny, Op. 299. May include an etude by Chopin, Debussy, Moszkowski, Rachmaninoff, etc.
Repertoire:
Each semester, memorize at least ten minutes of approved music, in addition to the etude described under technique. Works may be taken from the following, as judged appropriate by the instructor: (Freshman Year) Two-Part and Three-Part Inventions, J.S. Bach. First movement of a Classical Sonata: e.g. Clementi, Haydn, Mozart. Two Romantic works (one slow, one fast): e.g. Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann. Impressionistic/Twentieth Century work: e.g. Bartok, Copland, Preludes of Debussy, Gershwin, Kabalevksy, Khachaturian, Prokofiev, Preludes and Fugues of Shostakovich, and other representative composers. (Sophomore Year) Prelude and Fugue, from the Well-Tempered Clavier, J.S. Bach. Complete Classical Sonata: e.g. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven. Two Romantic works (one slow, one fast): e.g. Brahms, Chopin, Schumann. Impressionistic/Twentieth Century: see Freshman Year for recommended composers.
